Rate and label photos

Stars and color labels are how you sort keepers from the rest. Both work on every selected photo at once, in the grid, the filmstrip and Edit.

Select one or more photos and press a number key: 1 to 5 for that many stars, 0 to clear the rating.

You can also use Image › Rating, right-click a photo and choose Rating, or click the stars in the info panel.

Select photos and choose Image › Color Label, or right-click and choose Color Label. There are eight: red, orange, yellow, green, teal, blue, purple and pink. None clears it.

A labeled photo shows a thin colored bar under its thumbnail. The label never tints the area around the photo, so it doesn’t throw off how you judge its tones.

The filter chips in the toolbar narrow what the grid shows:

Chip Shows
Rating Photos with at least the stars you pick in its menu. Any rating clears it.
Color dots Photos with any of the colors you switch on. Click several to combine them.
Edited Its menu offers Edited or not, Edited only and Unedited only.

The photo count reads “N of M photos” while a filter hides some. Each chip is a shortcut for a search, so you can combine them with anything else in Search. The × that appears clears the whole search and all filters.

In the grid, Image › Undo (Ctrl+Z) takes back a rating or label change, one step at a time. The menu names the step, for example Undo Rating.

Technical details: picks and rejects

Photos can also carry a pick or reject flag. There is no menu command for flags yet; they come from scripts and AI assistants (see Scripting & MCP), and you can find them with the searches flag:pick and flag:reject.
